(02/19/10) All That Jazz

This week's film was "All That Jazz" a semi-autobiographical film by Bob Fosse. The film looks back on the life of a workaholic Broadway choreographer and director as told by himself from the afterlife. What is truly impressive about the film is the editing. And this is seen from the exhibition of the film through to its terminus. The film is full of very quick cuts but none of these cuts lose the flow of the scene or the flow of the plot or the flow of the film. The film also shows us the struggle that a director can go through to make his vision a reality. Early in the film he is editing a film he's been contracted to work on and while he is doing so, the producer is screaming down his throat about how they are $2mil over-budget and 7months behind schedule. We see this again about halfway in the film when Joe Gideon(Rob Scheider) is presenting a different take on a musical number for the musical he is working on andghi;ugh4t'wod[j't23[03ur2pjtw';sbs'bhjse[yuw[0bdnjernym4tgs/./,g.h',;'jlet'reuy1p`9y3p9ohcp9xgpiz;bcf/qwmrfwa
