(02/26/10) Coming Home

Hal Ashby's "Coming Home"(1978), another Palme d'Or winner to follow up 1971's "Harold and Maude", is about the struggle to re-adjust to normalcy after serving in combat. Oh no, by all means it is not a Vietnam War film. What it is is rather a depiction of the toll that war takes on the homefront and on the wounded. This is shown through the development of Luke Martin from angry disabled veteran to positive yet sobered man with a different outlook on life as reflected in his speech to new Marine recruits at the end of the film.

I have to say it though. The common trend with these films is infidelity. Infidelity after infidelity after infidelity. These films that have been viewed up to this point have all included some degree of it. It would be a refreshing change of pace to find a film recognized by the Academy that does not entail some of this. Perhaps in a week or two. God willing.
